Jem Filippi
Highway Founder/Designer
Mami Jem Filippi (aka Jem Filippi) was born in Kyoto, Japan. She resides in New York City’s downtown since the 1980s. She studied textile design, fashion and coloring course work in various schools; both in New York and in Japan. She has also lived in Tokyo and Bali.
Before she started designing bags, Jem worked as a fashion and fabric designer in New York City for over a decade.
In 2000, Jem established Hiponica---her original line of slings and laptop bags---and opened the Hiponica store in Nolita.
In 2005, Jem changed her brand name from Hiponica to Highway.
Her native Japanese sense of design and color and her passion for creativity has leaded the contemporary design of Highway bags.
Jem gets inspiration from street fashion, industrial design and the downtown urban scene.
Her signature shoulder and laptop bag designs are highly coveted, and since 2003 are found in specialty gift, boutique and design stores nationwide.
Her edgy, sweet and versatile line of nylon and leather bags and wallets are enjoyed for their functionality and impressive sense of color.
